New dawn for wahine at Auckland Art Fair
A young wahine Maori artist has seized the opportunity to exhibit new works referencing the Maori goddess of dawn at the Auckland Art Fair.
Raukura Turei is one of 18 emerging and established artists selected to exhibit projects alongside the wide range of artists represented by 28 New Zealand and 12 international galleries.
She says the suite of oil pastel drawings, Te poho o Hine Ruhi, are an abstracted view of her own body using a technique that allowed for a sort of meditative contemplation.
"We know the korero referring to our deity as she who raises the dawn, drawing specifically to female energy, sensuality and expression through a self-exploration I have been doing but now referring it, wanting to reach out to women and women in te ao Maori," Ms Turei says.
The Auckland Art Fair runs until Sunday at the Cloud on the waterfront.
