Cultural understanding lacking at Te Mata

Hastings mayor Sandra Hazlehurst says the Hastings District Council will undertake a cultural assessment so it can understand Ngati Kahungunu’s perspective on Te Mata Peak.
The iwi is demanding Craggy Range Winery remove the track it built up the side of the historically significant landmark, but the firm is trying to renege on its pledge to do so.
The council has appointed independent advisors to assess options put up by the winery.
They include a landscape architect, a cultural advisor, planning, policy and consenting experts, and also recreational planning advisors.
Ngati Kahungunu Inc chair Ngahiwi Tomoana says a cultural audit will reveal what iwi have been concerned about from day one.
