Little gives Tauranga more time to air grievance
Treaty Negotiations minister Andrew Little will hold off signing the Pare Hauraki Collective Redress Deed to give settlement groups more time to provide additional information.
On Tuesday about 500 people from Tauranga Moana iwi and Ngati Whatua Orakei marched to parliament to protest the settlement, which they say allows Hauraki to encroach on their mana whenua.
The deed was set to be signed next Tuesday, but Mr Little says he has given the parties until May 25 to make further submissions.
Pare Hauraki last week told the Maori Affairs Select Committee it has already agreed to set aside for now, a provision in the settlement that would give it a seat on the joint iwi-government Tauranga Moana Framework which oversees the harbour and catchments.
It also agreed to a proposal from Minister Little that a tikanga process should start within three months of the deed being signed.
A similar process was used between 2012 and 2014 while the settlement was developed, and it had also resolved differences with Te Arawa over guardianship of Moehau on the Coromandel Peninsula through a similar process.
