Tuai travels wins book award

Alison Jones and Kuni Kaa Jenkins’ book on an early Maori adventurer, Tuai: A traveller in two worlds, has won the illustrated non-fiction category at this year’s Ockham New Zealand Book Awards.
The book, which chronicles 1817 voyage of the Ngare Raumati chief from the Bay of Islands to England, grew out of their Marsden funded research into early Maori literacy.
The winner of the best non-fiction book was Diana Wichtel for her memoir Driving to Treblinka: A long search for a lost father, while the Acorn Foundation fiction prize went to Pip Adam for her second novel, The New Animals.
