About 500 people marched from Wellington Railway Station to parliament this morning to protest the crown's overlapping treaty claims policy.
Tribes like Ngati Whatua Orakei in Auckland and Ngai Te Rangi in Tauranga say settlement redress offered to Hauraki give tribes in the confederation rights within their mana whenua.
They're demanding a tikanga Maori process so tribes can sort out boundary differences on the marae before settlements are signed off.
The hikoi was met at parliament by Labour Maori MPs and Treaty Negotiations Minister Andrew Little, who said an effort was made last year to get a dialogue going between Ngai Te Rangi and the Hauraki collective, but it didn't get anywhere.
He was interrupted by Matakana Island kaumatua Bob Rolleston, who said Mr Little would be starting a war if the Government signed Hauraki's deed of settlement.
The Supreme Court will today wrap up a cased brought by Ngati Whatua Orakei against the overlapping claim policy, but a judgment isn't expected before next week's scheduled Hauraki signing.
