Hikoi as Hauraki push-back intensifies
Iwi from Orakei and Tauranga Moana have marched on parliament today to protest the crown’s overlapping claims policy – and in particular the redress offered in their rohe to Hauraki iwi.
The hikoi backs up an appeal by Ngati Whatua Orakei finishing today in the Supreme Court, and will attempt to put the pressure on the Government to postpone next week’s planned signing of the Hauraki settlement.
Crown Maori Relationship Minister Kelvin Davis says after talking to the Iwi Chairs Forum he has raised with Treaty Negotiations Minister Andrew Little their request for time to allow a tikanga-based solution where there are disputes about traditional territory, but it’s up to the minister to decide.
"A lot of this stuff is now being payed out in the media which just makes it really difficult because quite often the facts get in the way of the situation," he says.
