New uses sought for Maori calendar
Expect to see the traditional Maori calendar used for more than gardening and fishing.
A wananga in Rotorua this week has been looking other applications for the principles of maramataka..
Mapihi Raharuhi from Healthy Families Rotorua says the wananga brought together some well-known practitioners and champions of maramataka including Rereata Makiha, Heeni Taipari and Maui Te Pou to share their knowledge.
Listening to them were 30 young people with a range of occupations and interests including education, health and physical fitness.
"These are young people who have come through kohanga reo, kura kaupapa, and have come out into the big wide world and gone, ‘OK, so where’s our Maori systems, where’s our Maori kaupapa we learned all about in kohanga and kura and in the real world it’s not there,’ so these are exciting young people who want to apply our Maori systems to our context now," Ms Raharuhi says.
