Te Kawerau a Maki, Ngati Manuhiri and Ngati Rehua will hold a dawn ceremony will be held tomorrow to place the rahui on Okura Bush Scenic Reserve on Auckland’s North Shore.
The rahui to prevent kauri dieback is supported by the Department of Conservation which is temporarily closing a 4 kilometre walkway through the reserve.
DOC Auckland mainland operations manager Kirsty Prior says extensive work has been done to eliminate muddy sections of track and realign tracks away from kauri stands but some work couldn’t be completed before the onset of winter.
There will also be two new walk-through footwear cleaning stations built.
People can spread the microscopic spores of the kauri dieback disease by walking in infected soil or mud.
Te Kawerau a Maki executive manager Edward Ashby says the iwi welcomes DOC’s decision to respect the rahui.
