Tuuta up for MTV challenge

The new chair of Maori Television says he views the challenges facing the service as opportunities.
Jamie Tuuta from Ngati Mutunga adds the role to a busy portfolio that includes being the Maori Trustee, chairing the Maori fisheries trust Te Ohu Kaimoana, and serving on many iwi boards and businesses.
He says Maori Television does not exist on its own but is part of a cluster or ogranisations involed in the revitalisation and transmission of te reo maori including advocacy body Te Matawai, the Maori language commission Te Taura Whiri, broadcast funder Te Mangai Paoho , and the Maori radio network.
"The challenge we all have is ensuring we are relevent, that we are proving a positive experience whether it is to listeners or viewers, and thinking about the platforms and channels we adopt as we move forward to ensure that we remain relevant," Mr Tuuta says.
He says Maori Television is competing for people's time, whether that is on broadcast television or new digital platforms and apps.
