Talks way out of Tauranga stand-off

Talks way out of Tauranga stand-off
A Taurangamoana kaumatua has laid down a wero to Hauraki iwi to come and talk through their differences rangatira to rangatira.
Kihi Ngatai says the Waitangi Tribunal’s 2004 finding that some Hauraki iwi had customary interests in Tauranga Moana is a continuing threat to his iwi.
That has been made worse because officials have turned those interests into extensive rights.
He says Hauraki has offered to resolve any differences after its deed of settlement is signed, but he believes the tikanga Maori process must come first .
"I feel for Pare Hauraki with their claims because while this situation is happening their claims are at a standstill. If we can talk this issue through they can resolve their claims," Mr Ngatai says.
He has given Pare Hauraki a week to respond.
