King on waka for 160th anniversary
Waikato Tanui has marked the 160th anniversary of the foundation of the Kingitanga by assembling more than 100 waka for a regatta on the Wakato River at Ngaruawahia.
King Tuheitia joined in yesterday’s celebration, travelling on his waka Tatahi Ora, and then led a haka on the bank.
He told the hui at Turangawaewae Marae that 160 years ago waka from around the motu gathered to establish the Maori monarchy.
That effort was overseen by the rangatira Wiremu Tamehana, Iwikau te Heuheu and Potatau Te Wherowhero, whose direct descendants were there yesterday upholding the same responsibilities.
