Ngongotaha cleans up after flood
Civil defence and Rotorua Lakes Council staff were out this morning assessing the damage in Ngongotaha, where a state of emergency was declared yesterday.
Rotorua acting civil defence primary controller Bruce Horne says the region was subject to heavy rains through the day, causing the Ngonmgotaha Stream to burst its bank in the late afternoon.
More than 20 houses along Western Road were flooded, but Waitete Marae was safe.
"In fact they were gearing up to be emergency accommodation if we were going to be needing that, and likewise the school, which is on a bit of a high point. It was just some low lying areas around Western Rd that were most affected," Mr Horne says.
Some rain is expected today but not in yesterday's volumes.
