ETS settings critical to Maori wealth
Maori are set to benefit if the country embraces a shift away from fossil fuels.
That’s the view of Climate Change Minister James Shaw on the release of the Productivity Commission's draft report on transitioning to a low-emissions economy.
He says the Greens have long argued New Zealand will create significant economic opportunities if it embraces the inevitable shift early.
He says much of what needs to be done relates to land use, which is significant for Maori.
"We know the last Government wiped hundreds of millions of dollars off the Maori economy by changing the emissions trading scheme settings. If we get it right and set up an institutional framework that lasts for the next few decades, there is real opportunity there for Maori and for iwi interests," Mr Shaw says.
