Thousands turn out for ANZAC remembrance
Thousands of people turned out for Anzac Day dawn parades around the country.
It’s 103 years since New Zealand and Australian troops landed on at Gallipoli, and the day has become a time to remember all those who served in conflict.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern attended the event at Auckland War Memorial Museum, placing a wreath on the cenotaph on behalf of all New Zealanders, for all New Zealand men and women who have served.
New Zealand First MP Shane Jones attended the service in Whangarei.
He says Anzac Day parades were part of growing up in the north.
“It’s essential to stand and offer testimony to the families and communities that produced all those young men, many of whom never came home, and to remind the current generations the need for service and respect for duty and obligation goes on in every generation and the more casual we get about it, the more we court disaster,” he says.
