Tax trade off to benefit Manurewa bus and cycle users
Greens co-leader Marama Davidson says a regional fuel tax will bring benefits to the Manurewa community where she lives.
The tax is sparking comment on Auckland's proposed plan, with submitters saying it will be a burden on low income south Auckland communities.
But Ms Davidson says the current transport options don't serve the area well.
"The fuel tax is going to assist families in Manurewa to have better options for public transport as well as safer cycling and walking. A lot of people in Manurewa cycle and it is not very safe, so we are going to improve the safety for people who want to cycle as well," she says.
Ms Davidson says many families in Manurewa rely on public transport.
