Community critical for crime plan

Associate Justice Minister Aupito William Sio is welcoming an OECD report critical of continuing to get tough on crime policies.
The report looked favourably on some of the rehabilitative aspects of the system such as Maori and Pasifika youth courts, family group conferences and early intervention.
Mr Sio says that fits with the Government’s desire to move away from some of the highest incarceration rates in the developed world and become more focused on rehabilitation.
He also wants to involve the community more in addressing youth offending before it gets into the criminal justice system.
"Our people know what needs to happen and you can’t wait to provide the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff, you need to do earlier stuff – early intervention, local solutions, counseling, mentoring, all of that community-based stuff is so critical in turning things around," Mr Sio says.
