An international travelling exhibition on Dutch explorer Abel Tasman's voyage to Aotearoa New Zealand in 1642 is coming to Foxton's Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom museum.

Welcome Aboard has already been shown in the Netherlands and Tasmania.

Dutch Connection Museum Trust co-chair Arjan van der Boon the exhibition explores everyday life and the hardships on board, as well as the crew’s encounter with Ngati Tumatakokiri in Mohua/Golden Bay in December 1642.

The story is told from the perspectives of the barber who also acted as the doctor, the carpenter, and the navigator who was responsible for getting the 110-man crew home again.

The exhibition opens on April 28 during the museum's Big Orange Dutch Day Out celebrating the Dutch King Willem Alexander’s birthday.
