Bee smart business wins prize

Victory is sweet for Northland honey growers Lynette and Rob Murray.
They picked up the supreme prize at the Maori Women’s Development Incorporation business awards, which have been revived after a 10 year hiatus.
Incorporation chief executive Teresa Tepania Ashton says the firm stood out among the 80 entries for epitomising what the micro-lender is about.
"The key thing is it’s a whanau business, they employ locally, particularly youth. The honey business isn’t an easy business to be in. Really they’ve taken advantage to grow, to export, to really support the community and drive the economy forward for the north," she says.
Ms Tepania Ashton says one of the reasons for the success of the Maori Women’s Development Incorporation over the past three decades is the training and mentoring it offers along with the money.
