Poneke looks for Maori ward names
Wellington may soon have Maori names for its wards in its drive to become a bilingual city.
Mayor Justin Lester says the city is a liberal place and he expects most people will accept the change.
The change will be part of the six-yearly review of electoral arrangements.
It does not mean creating Maori wards.
Thed names proposed after consultation with iwi are Pukehinau for Lambton ward, Motukairangi for Eastern ward, Paekawakawa for Southern ward, Wharangi for Onslow-Western ward and Takapu for Northern ward.
Consultation on the changes will close on May 4.
