Taupo iwi fighting as chopper gets chop

Tuwharetoa Maori Trust Board is fighting for Taupo to retain its rescue helicopter service.
Chief executive Topia Rameka says the National Ambulance Sector Office is proposing to service the central North Island from bases in Hamilton, Tauranga, Napier, and New Plymouth.
That means at least another hour’s traveling time, which could be the difference between life and death for the hundreds of rescues made in the rohe every year.
Taupo is experiencing a tourism boom with thousands of people crossing Tongariro every week and increasing recreational activity on the lake and in the forests.
Mr Rameka says the board is calling on the Government to intervene and show leadership.
