Fuel levy extra tax for Papakura

A south Auckland marae is calling for a rethink of the proposed regional fuel tax because of the impact it will have on low income whanau.
Aucklanders are set to pay an extra 10 cents a litre for petrol from July 1, and they could be hit again next year through a national increase in the excise to pay for safety improvements on regional roads and $4 billion on rail and light rail infrastructure.
Tony Kake from Papakura Marae says while private businesses can recover some of the charge, for whanau it’s another expense that comes out of the household budget.
"We acknowledge we've got to pay for infrastructure somehow but I am calling on government to relook at the outcomes, the equity and the impact it is going to have. For us out in Papakura, in the south, we will incur more costs because we have to travel further," he says.
