Catholics gather in Ohakune for Hui Aranga
Maori Catholics are heading to Ohakune for the Hui Aranga.
Che Wilson from Ngati Rangi says the annual Easter hui is the oldest kapa haka competition in existence, having started at Otaki in1946.
"The kaupapa of the Hui Aranga is to celebrate the death and resurrection through kapa haka sport and religious activities. Probably about 50 per cent of the attendees aren't Catholic, a lot of them are Anglican and Ratana and other religions, but they tautoko the kaupapa and it's a good chance for people to come together to not only celebrate Easter but also do that through our Maoritanga", he says.
The Ohakune Catholic Maori Club expects about 1500 people at the hui, which will be held from today at Ruapehu College.
