Dredging plan best option – Peters
New Zealand First leader Winston Peters is assuring a Northland hapu it stands to benefit from development of Northport.
Patuharakeke is challenging New Zealand Refining’s application for consent to dredge a channel in Whangarei Harbour so larger shops can use Marsden Point.
Mr Peters, whose party made development of the port a condition of its coalition agreement, says better consultation is needed,
He believes the environmental damage will be minimal.
"So these things are in everybody’s interest. In short there is not a Maori view or a European view up north. There should be a New Zealand view where we all see the benefits and are all aware of the need to ensure there are no environmental disadvantages," Mr Peters says.
