Council plots eyed for pop up emergency housing
Housing activists plan to shame Auckland Council for failing to address homelessness in the country’s largest city.
Spokesperson Alan Johnson says Auckland Mayor Phil Goff and his councilors seem more interested in finding a home for the America’s Cup yacht syndicates than they are in finding homes for Aucklanders.
Mr Johnson’s group, Build Up Emergency Housing, wants to build relocatabler cottages on spare council land to show what can be achieved through citizens’ concerns and action.
The first demonstration cottage will be built on an undisclosed council owned site over a single weekend in mid-March, and then be trucked off to Te Puia Marae to house a small family.
Mr Johnson says Build-Up wants the council to provide free access to vacant council land and to permit housing developments without consent fees and connection charges.
He says Build-Up isn’t a permanent solution to the homelessness crisis but rather a stop gap measure for perhaps up to five years.
