Action needed to fill 200,000 service jobs
The Industry Training Organisation for the service sector is warning urgent action is needed to address critical skills shortages.
The ITO, which covers the tourism, hospitality, aviation, retail and museum industries, has delivered a package of documents to MPs including regional roadmaps, a workforce development plan and national Maori, Pasifika and literacy, language and numeracy action plans.
Chief executive Dean Minchington says around 200,000 new jobs will need to be filled over the next two to three years.
As employment is booming, declining polytechnic rolls suggest education is moving more into the workplace.
He says skills provision needs to be defined by industry need, and provided in a way that works for the trainee and the employer.
Transitions and careers advice have never been more important, as is the focus on inclusiveness and achievement for Maori and Pasifika communities.
Mr Minchington says tourism is the number one export earner for New Zealand, and offers every region an opportunity to grow, develop and upskill its people.or the service sector
