Iwi take lead in reo projects
Tairawhiti iwi are preparing to invest in te reo Maori revitalisation.
Maori language body Te Matawai has delegated the task of deciding what projects should be funded to eight regional investment panels.
Tairawhiti member Jeremy Tatere McLeod says the 11 tribes of his region have appointed their panel and endorsed the kaupapa that projects should help the language be spoken in the home and in the community.
"With the establishment of the pae motuhake in ensuring we had representatives of all those tribes it ensured that iwi had a voice and especially with my role as the Tairahiti representative representing interests for all tribes from Ngati Porou in the north all the way down to Cape Palliser with Kahungunu and Rangitane in the south as well as the Turanga, I think it's great and I think iwi are haing a say and iwi are driving this strategy," he says.
While iwi are at different stages with their settlements, many raised loss of te reo Maori in their claims and some including Ngati Kahungunu and Ngati Porou are spending settlement money on language strategies.
