Weightless network hooks Maori farmers to Internet of Things
Maori farmers in the Manawatu have gone weightless.
They're part of the Maori Future Farm initiative which has been connected up with the country's first Weightless Internet of Things wireless network.
Graeme Everton from Ngati Raukawa says technology company First Tree Growing is committed to introducing cutting-edge technology to New Zealand’s primary sector and it's concerned at the lack of initiatives catering to the specific needs of Maori producers given that Maori are significant investors in the sector.
It's working with Taiwanese technolgy vendor Ubiik on the project, which aims to demonstrate the benefits of Weightless, which uses significantly less power and spectrum than some more well known alternatives.
For the initial deployment, First Tree Growing is deploying 300 sensors exchanging temperature, humidity and GPS data every 5 or 10 minutes to a base station located multiple kilometres away.
