Heed the Call for finest funk
Get on your disco shoes and get set to dance again.
Celebrating the success of the Heed the Call compilation of New Zealand soul, funk and disco from the 1970s, compiler John Baker is bringing together some of the stars of the era for a concert in suburban Auckland next month.
Under the vintage disco ball will be the likes of Mark Williams, Collision, who played on the Dalvanius dance sensation Voodoo Lady, Tina Cross, and the Inbetweens.
Mr Baker says he and co-complier Allan Perrott tapped into a growing interest in funk from around the world.
"We’re getting collections from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Italy, France and the New Zealand stuff from that time totally stands up. Obviously artists like Mark Williams, Tina Cross were our big pop stars but Collision was one of our finest unknown funk exports ever," he says.
Heed the Call Live! is at the Hollywood Picture Theatre in Avondale on Friday March 23, with tickets on sale from the Under the Radar
