English record frays under scrutiny
New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says Maori went backwards during Bill English's time in Government and he deserves little praise.
Mr English announced yesterday he is stepping down as National Party leader and leaves parliament at the end of the month.
Mr Peters rejects attempts to characterise Mr English as a compassionate conservative, saying under his watch as finance minister and prime minister Maori home ownership rates plummeted, homelessness soared and wealth became concentrated in the hands of the few.
"This was a failed economic experiment. Mr English was a serious part of it and all around us today we see the housing reports coming out about the desperate situation for so many families in theirhundreds of thousands now, we see the Salvation Army saying food parcels are up by over 10 percent just in the last year. This is dramatic stuff," he says.
Mr Peters says Bill English let the mask slip this morning with his claim the Government had no money to implement its policies – even though he went through the election campaigning claiming the government books were in good health because of National's economic stewardship.
