The Public Service Association says the Tertiary Education Commission is dropping Maori and Pasifika-related positions as part of a plan to close careers offices in the regions.
The TEC took over the functions of Careers New Zealand last year, and intends to centralise to Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland and Whangarei.
PSA national secretary Erin Polaczuk says it will mean a substantial loss of knowledge, skills and expertise about careers and tertiary education.
She says young people in the regions, particularly Maori and Pasefika, could miss out on vital careers advice.
Getting rid of specific Maori and Pasefika positions could also harm the opportunity for rangatahi to get good advice about their career and education options.
