Charter schools march for survival
About 100 pupils and supporters of charter schools braved the rain yesterday to march down Auckland’s Queen St to protest the possible end of their schools.
Education Minister Chris Hipkins introduced legislation last week to scrap publicly-funded private schools, which he says was a policy driven by ideology rather than evidence.
He will negotiate with school providers about shifting to the state system if they want to continue.
The march was led by Epsom MP and former undersecretary for education David Seymour, who made the partnership school policy the price of ACT’s support deal with National.
He accused Mr Hipkins of being a weasel hiding behind misinformation.
