Principals pick curriculum over tests
Some schools are entering the new teaching year saying they need something in place of the assessment regime imposed by the former National-led Government.
Mr Cormack says national standards forced schools to concentrate on reading, writing and maths to the detriment of other subjects.
"The previous Government claimed parents weren’t happy there weren’t getting sufficient and rich information in terms of school reports. We argued against that. So one of the jobs I’m going to ensure gets rolled out is we strengthen how we report and how we assess so our whanau feel confident we are returning to our strong curriculum," he says.
Mr Cormick says the Principals Federation will offer guidance to its members on what they need to do to unlock the curriculum and strengthen reporting and assessment.
