Waiheke rallies to fight marina
Waiheke's Save Kennedy Point group is planning a summer concert to raise funds to challenge a proposed marina in the Environment Court.
Spokesperson Kathryn Ngapo says the site of the 7 hectare marina in Putiki Bay is the most historically significant bay for Maori on the island, with 70 known archaeological sites including the paa Te Putiki O Kahumatamomoe.
There are also five sites of ecological significance in the coastal marine area as well as godwits, the threatened northern New Zealand dotterel, and little blue penguin nesting in the breakwater at Kennedy Point.
She says approval of the marina by Auckland Council is inexplicable and has shocked a majority of the Waiheke community, including Piritahi Marae, environmentalists, Kennedy Point residents and many overseas visitors to the island.
The Sun Kissed Picnic on February 17 will include King Kapisi, The Mighty Herbsmen, Radio Rebelde, The Solomon Cole Band and Aaron Carpenter and the Revelators.
