Stars join push for 800 trade trainees

Maori and Pasifika Trades Training Auckland has launched a social media campaign to encourage rangatahi into a career in the trades.
Project manager Kirk Sargent says many Maori and Pasifika may miss out on a trades career because of stigma and misconceptions about the sector, such as that trades are for high school dropouts, or being concerned about how they will pay fees or support their family while training.
The Youse Got Choices campaign is a series of 15 second videos featuring personalities like former Silver Ferns player Bernice Mene, ex-Warriors coach Tony Kemp and Maungakiekie-Tamaki ward chair Josephine Bartley.
The campaign also tackles female underrepresentation, with Bernice Mene explaining why the trades are not just for the guys.
Maori and Pasifika Trades Training aims to recruit more than 800 new trainees this year for its courses, which are fee free to those of Maori or Pasifika heritage.
