Pioneer Battalion photos surface
Hundreds of previously unpublished photos will feature in a new book on Maori in the First World War.
Historian Monty Soutar says he's finished the manuscript for Whitiki, which is part of a series of authoritative print histories on New Zealand and World War 1 produced jointly by Te Manatu Taonga, Massey University, the New Zealand Defence Force and the RSA.
The book will be similar in size to Dr Soutar’s acclaimed Nga Tama Toa – The Price of Citizenship, about C Company of the Maori Battalion.
He says many of the photos, including those of about 700 Pioneer Battalion members, come from private collections handed down through the generations.
