Maori perspective needed in death debate

The Anglican Bishop of Te Tai Tokerau wants discussion on David Seymour's euthanasia bill to encompass wider questions of end of life and palliative care.

The End of Life Choice Bill passed its first reading last week and is set for an extended nine months of submissions.

Bishop Kito Pikaahu says the Anglican church will make submissions and hold its own internal discussions to come up with a response.

He says the church is about life in its fullness, and death is part of that.

"I would welcome a discussion about how we understand life, how we understand death and the phases of life just before death. All the wisdom of our culture and the Maori world view I believe would speak very well on this issue but also I would hope there would be submissions from various Maori organisations that would assist the government coming to a decision," Bishop Pikaahu says.
