Te hunga rangatahi primed for revival of Waikato awa
Studies that may lead to contributions to cleaning up the Waikato River could get a boost from a new scholarship.
Waikato-Tainui and the Waikato District Council are offering the $10,000 scholarship to Waikato-Tainui rangatahi studying planning, resource management, environmental science, ecology studies or engineering at either undergraduate or postgraduate level.
Rukumoana Schaafhausen, the chair of Waikato Tainui's Te Arataura executive board, says if the tribe is to be successful in its aspirations to restore and protect the health and wellbeing of the Waikato River for future generations, it must engage rangatahi to uphold that commitment.
She says the scholarship is a stepping stone for those who will one day make valued contributions to support the vision and strategy.
Waikato mayor Allan Sanson says this scholarship arises from his council's commitment to a joint management agreement with Waikato-Tainui to co-manage, protect and restore the Waikato River.
Applications close on March 31.
