Tipene-Leach added to health ministerial advisory group
A Maori GP known for his innovative public health projects on prevention of long-term conditions such as diabetes and sudden unexplained death in infancy has been appointed to a new group to advise Health Minister David Clark on the health system.
Dr David Tipene-Leach recently took up a position as a professor of Maori and indigenous research at the Eastern Institute of Technology.
The ministerial advisory group will be chaired by former PWC New Zealand chief executive and general government troubleshooter Sir Brian Roche, and also includes Dr Lester Levy, who chairs the three Auckland district health boards, former director-general of health Dr Karen Poutasi and Muriel Tunoho, the president of E Tu union and national coordinator for Healthcare Aotearoa, which represents many community and iwi controlled primary health providers.
Dr Clark says nine years of under-resourcing and neglect have taken their toll on the public health system, and the Labour Led Government will invest an extra $8 billion in the sector.
He says the committee will provide fresh perspective and independent advice about how to improve the health system.
