Victoria University boosts Maori outreach
Wellington's Victoria University is looking to turbo-charge iwi scholarship programmes.
Its deputy vice-chancellor (Maori), Professor Rawinia Higgins, says there should be about 1000 Maori students, given the dermographic nature of the catchment, but the total falls short of that.
It responded by funding staff to work with iwi on identifying their needs, their research priorities and ways they could make existing scholarship programmes more effective.
"We match them dollar for dollar and we see that not so much as just a scholarship but a way to engage better as a university with Maori communities around their priorities for education and building capacity and capability among their own people," Professor Higgins says.
The event also marks the presentation of Te Tini a Rehua awards which are given to the top Maori undergraduate student in each faculty.
