Whanau taonga to lay alongside Kingi tangi

There will be some gaps in the display cases at Auckland Museum this week as significant Te Arawa taonga are taken out for the tangi of Ngati Whakaue rangatira Hamilton Manaia Pihopa Kingi.
Mr Kingi, who was known by the name Pihopa given to him at his christening by Anglican Bishop of Aotearoa Frederick Bennett, died in Rotorua of cancer on Tuesday aged 88.
His nephew Rawiri Waru says family taonga on long term loan to the museum are taken out for such occasions.
"We have a rather big mere club in the museum on display, it's called Te Kaoreore, and another one Kihirangi, and a patu paraoa also, quite significant pieces in the Auckland museum," he says.
Mr Waru says Pihopa Kingi was a tono rangatira with whakapapa lines into all Te Arawa iwi, and there will be a lot of hard thinking about who can fill his various roles.
The tangi is at Te Papaiouru Marae in Ohinemutu.
