Low carbon transition will take time

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says Labour is committed to move to a low carbon economy but the transition could take time.
The Government is under pressure from Maori and environmental groups to block seismic testing in the South Taranaki Bight with the oil exploration ship Amazon Warrior due in the area any day.
Ms Ardern says Labour has concerns about the way the commissioners who make consent decisions have been appointed and it wants to be sure they are acting in the best interests of communities and the environment.
She says the Labour Party was born out of the extractive industries but it’s not stuck in time.
"Probably the process we are going through is the one New Zealand is going through. We need to transition into an economy which is not reliant on fossil fuels because that is not our future but it will be a transition and that is somethng we are working with our local communities which have been reliant on those industries to make sure we do that properly and we do it well," Ms Ardern says.
