Maori landowners get erosion help
The Ministry of Primary Industries will pay landowners in the Gisborne area $7.4 million to protect their land from erosion.
Deputy director-general Ben Dalton says it will cover almost 5000 hectares and brings to $42 million the amount the ministry has spent on erosion control in the region since 1992.
The ministry’s Erosion Control Funding Programme works in partnership with Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou and Gisborne District Council.
It also runs other programmes directly, encouraging landowners across the country to plant on erodible land or retire land to regenerate native bush.
