Wharf house creator Royal fellow
Artist Michael Parekowhai and Maori studies professor Margaret Mutu are among the 16 researchers and scholars in the latest crop of Fellows of Royal Society Te Aparangi.
Professor Parekowhai from the University of Auckland uses sculpture, installation and photography to address questions of place, nationhood and biculturalism.
He represented New Zealand at the 2011 Venice Biennale, and his public sculptures include The Lighthouse on Auckland’s Queen’s Wharf.
Professor Mutu, also from Auckland University, was nominated for her analysis of Maori language texts relating to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Maori claims against the Crown, oral histories and traditions, and Treaty settlements.
Society vice president Professor Barry Scott says to be elected fellows must demonstrate a depth of intellect and originality in their thinking that enriches our lives and broadens our knowledge through their inquiries.
He says the society is working to increase the diversity of its fellows, with seven women and the two Maori elected this year.
