Manurewa MP waiting for court date over soft approach to racist Maori cartoons

Manurewa MP Louisa Wall is waiting for a new court date for her suit against the Human Rights Review Tribunal for its soft response to a cartoon depicting Maori as bad parents and dole bludgers.
The Al Nisbett cartoons were penned in May 2013.
The tribunal found they stereotyped Maori as welfare recipients, poor parents and preoccupied with smoking, drinking and gambling – but they didn’t bring Maori into contempt.
"What we’re really fighting for is a clarification of human rights principles such as freedom of expression or freedom of the press versus what I believe is their duty of care to ensure that when they are balancing that freedom of expression they also have to protect groups such as Maori and Pacific from freedom. We have a right to experience freedom from discrimination," Ms Wall says.
