Mallard likely to be firm speaker
The new parliament has been sworn in and MPs have elected Trevor Mallard as speaker.
The veteran Labour politician has often clashed with speakers but former Labour and now New Zealand First MP Shane Jones says he has also put a great deal of effort into understanding the arcane rules and laws of parliament.
"Trevor could be a little bit like the fox turned guardian as opposed to running loose inside parliament but he knows his stuff. I dare say he will be quite firm. If you don't toe the line, I wouldn't be surprised if Trevor Mallard says 'okay, there's the door,'" Mr Jones says.
