Port stunt an insult to Auckland

Central Auckland iwi Ngati Whatua Orakei say the Ports of Auckland draft masterplan released yesterday is a clumsy attempt to out-flank the incoming government and undermine the Mayor.
Spokesperson Ngarimu Blair says it’s also an insult to the people of Auckland who want the port to leave their harbour as soon as possible.
The plan for the 77 hectare site includes a five-storey car parking building to hide away the 30,000 cars that are unloaded every month, a new head office building and engineering workshop and further expansion of Bledisloe Wharf into the harbour – something that sparked public protests two years ago.
Mr Blair says his iwi totally supports the new government’s intent to move the port.
He says Mayor Phil Goff was elected on a campaign to return the waterfront to the people of Auckland and he now needs to bring its board and CEO under control.
If the Mayor is unwilling to take charge then the Government needs to act.
