Wahakura weaver on top of flax excess
A Northland weaver believes she may have set a record by weaving 19 flax bassinets in a day.
Cassandra Moar picked a load of harakeke last Wednesday to make wahakura waikawa, but when she arrived home she found another load of waiting.
She’s a fast weaver, so took up the challenge to use it all.
Ms Moar estimates she has woven well over 1000 wahakura since working out the structure in sessions with Hastings GP and Maori safe sleep/SUDI researcher Dr David Tipene-Leach.
The 19 wahakura were handed to Northland District Health Board’s Te Puawai Ora maternity service to be matched with families.
Wahakura are clinically-approved and enable mothers to sleep safely with with newborn babies.
