Oranga Tamariki to lose vulnerable tag

South Auckland community worker George Ngatai has welcomed a name change for the Ministry for Vulnerable Children.
Incoming Minister for Children Tracey Martin says she will drop the vulnerable tag and be the minister for all children.
Mr Ngatai is co-chair of Safer Aotearoa Family Violence Prevention Network, which criticised the name and referred to the ministry by its Maori name Oranga Tamariki.
He says calling some children vulnerable risked labelling and stigmatising them, creating a distance between the community and those who needed the most help.
He also welcomed the decision by incoming Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to become the Minister for Child Poverty Reduction.
Mr Ngatai is also an ambassador for family violence reduction group White Ribbon, which is about to start a month-long campaign leading up to a We Stand because We Care march up Auckland’s Queen St on November 25, the international day of White Ribbon.
