Wakatu Incorporation-owned food and drinks company Kono,has bought Ngai Tahu Seafood’s greenshell mussel assets including the right to lease 15 marine farms in Marlborough Sounds, Tasman Bay, Golden Bay and Collingwood.
The deal comes includes two purpose-built marine farming vessels and associated aquaculture equipment.
Chief executive Rachel Taulelei says it gives the company’s already-strong mussel growing and processing business increased certainty of supply.
Having more water space gives alternate harvest areas which helps manage risk.
Kono employs over 400 staff.
Kono Greenshell mussels are exported individually snap frozen on the half shell to more than 25 countries around the world.
