New indigenous professor takes long view

New indigenous professor takes long view
The new Professor of Indigenous Studies at the University of Auckland and co-director of Maori research centre Nga Pae o te Maramatanga says taking a long view is important in Maori development.
Linda Waimarie Nikora was welcomed on to Waipapa Marae this morning, accompanied by her Tuhoe and Te Aitianga a Hauiti whanau.
She says every generation of Maori tries to make the world a better place for the generation to come.
"The focus on generations to come is an important one because a lot of the challenges we face today are long term ones, they are not going to be fixed overnight. Taking a long term view is important but equally trying to solve problems now in order to make people’s lives in the present more meaningful is also important so intervention, prevention, those sorts of things are critically important," Professor Nikora says.
The former University of Waikato associate professor says her background in psychology and her networks not just in Aotearoa but with indigenous researchers around the world will make her new mahi stronger.
